How We Work

Custom software shouldn’t feel like a leap of faith. It should feel like a plan.

No more guesswork. Experienced people, a careful process, and AI where it genuinely helps.

Aboard's "Managing Agents" booklet

95% of AI software initiatives fail. Why do ours succeed?

We evolved the process

For years, software thinking was dominated by Agile: boards, sprints and standups designed to manage the human bottleneck. AI has sped up building so much that we invented a new strategy, Cadence. It starts with collaborative intake and careful planning, spending time with stakeholders who can show us the company’s data and how decisions get made. That reveals the client’s core processes, challenges, and opportunities, so we can scope the work with care.

We don’t put AI in charge, we put it to work

Vibe coding, tokenmaxxing, prompt engineering: none of it has produced truly great software, and most companies are learning that the expensive way. With execution commoditized, the hard part is choosing the right solution, and AI amplifies the gap between average and great talent. Aboard has built an elite pool of technical talent over years—senior AI-expert engineers who actually know how to ship. Great products now come from people who understand your business and think like product people. That’s Aboard.

What it’s like to partner with us

The best of a traditional software agency, the speed of AI tooling.

  1. You’re in the room

Our small, senior teams own the work from scoping through production, and they are your full partners in the process. Your stakeholders review the briefs, comment as the work takes shape, and sign off on each milestone.

  2. Your working software, early

No more endless decks, piles of specs, or monthslong bottlenecks. With us, strategy, product, and engineering are united, so first cuts of real, working software turn around in weeks, not quarters. AI makes it fast, our team of humans makes it perfect.

  3. Fit to how you already operate

We work the way large, established organizations already do: existing tools, existing approval chains, existing teams. Our systems are always built, secured, and supported to enterprise standards.

  4. We stay after launch

We keep working together to make your software better, standing behind our work and helping guide you to your next great leap forward. Our delivery playbooks are designed to scale from one engagement to your whole organization.

How a leap of faith becomes a plan.

Every engagement follows six phases. The first three make sure we’re solving the right problem. The last three ship it without breaking the business.

  1. Understand · Phase 01

    Landscape

You need to finally get somewhere, so we need to know the bigger picture.

What is your mandate? What’s the broader environment? How do you compete and create value? What market dynamics, competitors, regulation, and tech shifts shape your constraints and opportunities? To figure this out, we map your market, business model, and competition. This deep perspective ensures that our work begins with a shared perspective, and downstream decisions are grounded in the real world your business lives in.

  2. Understand · Phase 02

    Audit

    Let’s find out what’s broken.

We spend time with your key stakeholders, who can give us access to your company’s data and how decisions are made. Then we can take an end-to-end look at your operational reality—workflows across teams, tools, where data lives, and where inefficiencies and friction are bubbling up. Exposing breakdowns, redundancies, and hidden dependencies that must be addressed shows us what transformation will look like.

  3. Understand · Phase 03

    Blueprint

Here’s where a detailed map takes shape.

We define your bespoke product strategy—systems and workflows that resolve current inefficiencies and unlock new capabilities. This is where the insight we’ve gained becomes design: How will users interact with the system? What functionality is required? How does your business operate post-transformation? You see ideal user journeys, PRDs, and more to nail down a plan everyone can rally behind.

  4. Build · Phase 04

    Architecture

This is the part our engineers love.

We staff a multi-disciplined team that can finalize our plan and incrementally build out the robust technical foundation that your company’s future state is built on—system structure, component interactions, data modeling, and accessibility. At this point we are one with your product intent, and we’re turning that into a coherent system design aligned with where you are now and where you want to grow.

  5. Build · Phase 05

    Migrate

    It’s moving day.

We get you off your old stack without breaking the business. We’ve been doing this for years, and it remains the most complex part of transformation, reconciling legacy systems with new architecture without disruption. Systems are properly connected, data is accurately transformed and migrated, and business continuity is maintained through deployment.

  6. Build · Phase 06

    Build

    Welcome to your future

Your new software takes full shape through point releases, robust testing, and security audits: enterprise-grade code at AI speed. We deploy in stages, and continuously integrate, validate, and refine your new product against real requirements. Your team is trained, they own this, and your plan is now fully operationalized as functioning software.

Software solutions are essential, but they’re also just the beginning.

Our team collaborates with you to clean up your digital and data messes, find out where AI can supercharge your work, and get your game plan in motion.
